Teaching Assistants

The following notes will help Teaching Assistants (TA)s feel prepared to help the Instructor improve the online textbook and Canvas modules as well as score student work with the highest level of accuracy and consistency.

Markdown for poor grammar and leave this message:

English grammar and spelling problems were not corrected. Students are required to use Grammarly or LanguageTool browser extensions to help catch errors that applications do not catch. If you need a review or your writing each week, please use the TutorMe servivce in Canvas, or contact the OSU Writing Center.

Obligations

...to the Department

All TAs must take the FERPA Student TA training module and quiz online before they can be added to a Canvas course where they have access to student data.

TAs must read, understand, and follow the EECS Graduate Handbook.

Undergraduate TAs must read, understand, and follow section 2 of the EECS Graduate Handbook.

...to the Instructor

TAs are obligated to provide their allotted hours of assistance (FTE) to their assigned instructor each week. If you have questions about this, please contact your supervisor. A typical Summer Session assignment is .3 FTE (19.5 hours per week). A typical Fall, Winter, and Spring assignment is either .25 (10 hours) or .5 (19 hours)

TAs may be asked to:

  • Review course materials and make recommendations.
  • Submit bug reports.
  • Check the accuracy of facts and procedures.
  • Contribute ideas.
  • Grade assignments.
  • Produce teaching materials.

...to the Students

Students have paid a small fortune to be in their courses, so we are obligated to give them the best service possible within the typical expectations. These include:

  • Timely and accurate scores.
  • Timely and accurate feedback written with an objective tone (rather than negative tone).
  • Timely answers to their questions.
  • Empathy when they are struggling.
  • Patience.
  • Review of terms, concepts, skills, and procedures as needed online and/or in office hours.
  • Accommodations as required by DAS.

Before the first day of class

Read the chapters thoroughly.

To avoid confusing students and making them angry, it is important that textbook/Canvas errors are corrected before students begin the term. Read all the materials and Canvas and in the online textbook, then do the following:

  1. Report all typos, bugs, broken links, mis-numbered steps, and confusing instructions via the Instructor's weekly email. Provide the page's URL and a bulleted list of recommendations.
  2. Open each Explore Topics Template in each chapter to ensure the green prompts match the instructions, scoring criteria, and rubrics.
  3. Look at the good examples for chapter 1 and 2 to understand how they meet requirements.
  4. Refer to Writing Samples to understand the required writing style.

Test and document procedures.

  1. Try the procedures for each skill in each chapter, if any:
    • To ensure they make sense and are still accurate.
    • Look for consistent styling of menus and choices or input.
    • Some applications change without warning, which might mean that new writing, screenshots, and screencasts are needed.
  2. Report all typos, incorrect rubrics and confusing instructions via email.
  3. Take cropped screenshots of each procedure that needs updating. Crop, resize, and optimize screenshots as needed to reduce load time. Send all new screenshots as PNG files to the instructor via email labeled with the chapter number, section title (orange), step number (blue headline), and substep number. Do not insert the PNG files into a Word document...just attach the PNG Files to the email message.
  4. You may be asked to make screencasts of some steps. Review and practice using the instructions in CS 101's chapter 11.

Global Notes

Start scoring the day an assignment is due.

Regardless of the day an assignment is due, you must begin scoring the day it is due. Spend a few hours grading that day and finish up within the next 2 days. Do not wait until the next project is due to get started scoring...this is unfair to the student and causes a great deal of anxiety. They deserve to know as soon as possible if their work is adequate. If it isn't, they need time to make improvements for the next project, which is due within a few days.

Keep an eye on the Canvas Coming Up menu and/or the Calendar and plan your other activities accordingly.

TurnItIn will check for plagiarism.

View the Originality Report for each student's submission before you begin scoring it. If a student plagiarized a lot, then alert the instructor so she can deal with it. If a student has minor plagiarism, then score it in the correct rubric line item in Canvas Speedgrader. A sentence or two without quotation marks earns a .5 score and several sentences earns a 0 score.

How to comment and score plagiarism.

If a student's report did not generate, give them the point. We are unable to upload it ourselves, unfortunately (Fall 2018).

These kinds of highlighting can be ignored:

  • Instruction pages or Table of Contents.
  • Page, slide, or section titles.
  • Titles of articles or laws.
  • Quoted phrases or sentences.
  • Common phrases.
  • Bibliography entries.

When students have minor plagiarism, use this comment:

I reviewed the plagiarism report and see that it has several phrases highlighted. They are pretty common, however, so I will allow them. In the future, be sure to ignore the percentage and review the actual report for any phrases or sentences that get highlighted. That is your opportunity to edit. Second drafts can be submitted before the deadline.

When students have major plagiarism, use this comment:

Too much of your writing is copied, copied without quotation marks, or poorly edited. Please get help learning how to write without plagiarizing by reviewing this tutorial: http://people.oregonstate.edu/~vanlondp/turnitin.html and by contacting one or more writing support service listed at the end of each chapter.

Canvas Rubric

Click the View Rubric button and TurnItIn buttons.

All projects are scored using a Rubric in Canvas SpeedGrader. The rubrics match the scoring criteria in the textbook chapters.

If you have questions about how to score a project, then you must ASK the instructor before you finish scoring a student's work, so that the student is not confused or mad about a score change.

Report all confusing Rubrics to the instructor immediately.

Specific markdown solutions
  • If a student did not cite new research in their reply to another student's discussion thread, then mark them down a point. They can't just repeat something they already said in their initial thread. It must provide new information with a new source.
We were expecting new research on your classmate's topic or dilemma, rather than the same information you provided earlier.
Or, if research is missing, mark down a point.
    Reply threads require new research.
  • If a student did not cite the definition of their theory or approach, use this feedback:
We were expecting citations for the definitions of theory/approach.
  • Markdown writing convention problems in the Grammar and Spelling criteria. Use the commenting icon for that criterion to leave a polite note which refers back to the writing conventions on page 1 of the template.
I recommend you review the writing conventions on page 1 of the template to avoid continued markdowns.
  • If students aren't using (author year) for the second mention of an article they hyperlinked earlier, leave this note (but don't mark down as long as the title is hyperlinked):
I recommend you review the writing requirements related to second mentions of previous source: http://people.oregonstate.edu/~vanlondp/cs391/articles/citations.html
  • If a student writes in the first-person style on pages that require writing in the the third-person style, leave them a comment but don't mark them down if they have provided the necessary research and citations. Refer to Writing Samples from chapter 1's readings.
I recommend that in the future, you write in the third-person active voice instead of the first-person style, unless your opinion is required for that paragraph or page. Refer to these writing samples: http://people.oregonstate.edu/~vanlondp/cs391/articles/writing-samples.html
  • If students can't write in English well enough to be understood, then refer them to the last steps of each chapter page:chap
Please see a tutor for help with English Writing. I was unable to understand several sentences in your writing. Refer to the tutoring sources listed at the bottom of each chapter page: http://people.oregonstate.edu/~vanlondp/cs391/one.php#tutors
  • If a student has copied their text into the template but did not change the font and font size, provide this comment in the Spelling and Grammar criterion:
Hello. In the future, if you pasted the writing from a different source, please revise the font and size to match the required Lato 14. This will alleviate eye strain. Thank you.
  • Refer to the updated illustration examples for marking informative versus non-informative illustrations.
  • If an illustration lacks information then use this feedback:
The illustration lacks information. Please refer to the Illustration Requirements page and compare informative versus non-informative illustrations to improve your future choices. http://people.oregonstate.edu/~vanlondp/cs391/articles/illustrations.html
  • If the illustration's copyright statement is missing or students say they didn't need one, then use this markdown:
If an image is part of the public domain or has a Creative Commons licence, I still require a copyright statement so I know you know how to create it. If the date is missing, use the date in the footer of the originating website.
  • If an illustration is missing a hyperlink, do not mark it down unless the Rubric has an option for it.
  • If the Template does not specify the number of required sources for a page and the criterion doesn't specifically say a number, then don't mark it down unless other required details or sources are missing. For example, if the Modern Learning page doesn't cover all three topics, you won't necessarily need to mark down.
  • As noted in the bibliography notes, I do not care what standard is used for the biblio. I prefer them to be bulleted or at least separated with a line space. As long as the standard data are included for each entry and they are easy to read, give them credit. Do not mark down unless the list is too hard to read or some are missing. Hyperlinks are not required but the URL is. You can leave this comment:
Hello. To improve the readability of your bibliography, please use bullets or space after each entry. Also, URLs will automatically hyperlink when you include the http://.
  • If a student's bibliography does not include the required entries (starting with chapter 2), leave this comment in the rubric:
The Explore Topics discussion readings bibliography must be added to the Case file bibliography page(s). They can be in any order and do not need to be in separate groups.
  • Don't score students who have not submitted; the instructor will provide them with more guidance.
  • If students were unable to upload their file, provide this comment in the Comment box (not rubric).
When you have trouble submitting the file, you may attach it to the Assignment in the Commenting area. If the deadline has passed, you will not be allowed to submit or attach. If you continue to have trouble uploading Assignments please contact Canvas Help.
  • If TurnItIn has not processed a file, provide full credit for lack of plagiarism in the Rubric. TurnItIn often has problems when too many people bombard the server, so from time to time, we'll have a few students who can't see their report. Sometimes Graders can see them when choosing the name from the TurnItIn screen even if the percentage icon is missing.
The Originality Report did not generate, unfortunately, so I must grant credit anyway.

SpeedGrader Comments.

Immediately after scoring, add a salutation and this note to the SpeedGrader Comment box to tell students how to view their feedback and remind them how to ask for clarification:

Click the View Rubric button to score and paste comments into the field.

For students who are confused about how the documents are to be drafted, please refer me to them by providing me with the Speedgrader URL for their submission. You can also leave them this note:

Hello, __ Take a look here at the Example Projects to compare your work to the best example for each chapter we've done so far: https://oregonstate.instructure.com/courses/1706569/pages/good-examples Feel free to write to the Instructor often to ask questions when you are confused. She is here to help you succeed.

If there is a gradebook glitch of some kind, please use polite language to alert the students. For example, instead of this:

Next time please create a post inside of the discussion for your group instead of replying to the general example.

Say hello and provide more detail:

Hello. I am unable to see your thread in the Gradebook because it was added to a general group rather than a specific group. Perhaps you were not yet assigned. I found your thread and have scored it now. Thank you.

Do not reply to students' questions in Canvas.

The instructor will answer all student questions in Canvas. If a student sends you an email, please pass it onto me. I want to ensure that they receive a timely answer as well as a consistent message. If their questions are related to confusing instructions then I'll have the opportunity to fix them right away so everyone benefits.

DO answer their questions in class and relay answers to me that affect the course materials or deadlines.

More will be added as I answer your questions.

SpeedGrader Comment:

Writing Requirements page

We were expecting notes about the word counts of each assignment: 250 words per PAGE of the Explore Topics templates and 150 words per PARAGRAPH in the Case Examination Discussions.
and/or
We were expecting to see notes about using the third-person active voice rather than the first person style.

Citation Methods page

Articles, laws, and movies must be cited by hyperlinking their titles and subsequent uses of the same source can be cited with (author year).

Synthesis Writing page

We were expecting more detail about some of the other articles/movies mentioned in the main article.

Library Research page

We were expecting a full page of detail about an article you found by searching the OSU Library.

Avoiding Plagiarism Page

We were expecting more detail about each of the three quadrants of the diagram.

Using TurnItIn

What specific features of TurnItIn should be ignored?

For the Illustration page

The copyright owner of a meme or movie is the creator/publisher and not necessarily the host. For example, YouTube, Google Images and MemeGenerator do not own the copyright on materials uploaded by users.

If the illustration's copyright statement is missing or students say they didn't need one, then use this markdown:

If an image is part of the public domain or has a Creative Commons licence, I still require a copyright statement so I know you know how to create it. If the date is missing, use the date in the footer of the originating website.

Thank you for participating, __. If you have questions about the feedback I left in the rubric, please reply here in the Grades --> Assignment --> Commenting box so the Instructor can respond quickly. She will also respond with notes about your topic interests within the next few days.

Paragraph 1 can be as short as a sentence or longer; no need to mark down unless they did not mention a country or state or origin.

Paragraph 2 should mention their degree as well as the kind of work they want to do. Mark down if they did not specifically mention the kind of work.

Paragraph 3: This type of generic response for paragraph 3 of the introduction discussion does not meet the requirements:

Considering that this course revolves around ethics and social issues in computer science, I expect to learn a lot about the state of ethics and social issue surrounding the use of computers.
But noting specific concepts does meet requirements:
...information privacy, ... information sharing, especially for marketing purposes. ... legal and political implications ... theoretical systems ...etc.

Paragraph 4: Modern Learning paragraph should focus on what the outside sources had to say in the article, rather than what the instructor said:

We were expecting mention of the outside sources and their ideas rather than notes about what the instructor said, specifically.
Titles of outside sources are required. Remind them to cite this way if they did not:
I see you've cited sources, but did not use the required format where the title is hyperlinked in the sentence. Refer back to the Citation Methods column 1: http://people.oregonstate.edu/~vanlondp/cs391/articles/citations.html
OR
You cited the instructor's article rather than original sources within that article.

If students can't write in English well enough to be understood, then refer them to the last steps of each chapter page:

I recommend you use the new TutorMe Writing Lab service available inside our Canvas course. An English writing specialist can review your writing in roughly 3 hours, so that you can continue to improve your assignment submissions.

Speedgrader comment

If a student's template is blank or in some other format, use this comment:

The document you provided is either not using this week's Explore Topics template, or the pages are empty. Please submit the correct file before midnight tonight. In the future, please confirm your submission immediately after to ensure you have submitted the correct file. Thank you.

On the Speech, Censorship, and Ai page:

We were expecting a full page of writing about an article from each of these categories of readings: The First Amendment (USA), Internet Censorship, Hate Speech, and Artificial Intelligence table.

On the Cyberbullying page:

We were expecting a full page of writing about one of the articles provided in the reading list.
and/or
We were expecting a personal anecdote about being cyberbullied OR notes about a recent case of Cyberbullying found in the news.

On the Media Bias Chart page:

We were expecting detailed writing about how the chart works.
and/or
We were expecting a personal anecdote about how the chart validates or does not validate your current reading habits.

On the Smart News page:

We were expecting a full page of writing about an article you found by using the Smart News app.

The illustration lacks information (such as text):

Please review the concept of information in an image versus images without information in the Illustration Requirements from chapter 1.

If the illustration is missing or has the incorrect copyright statements:

The copyright owner of a meme or movie is the creator/publisher and not necessarily the host. For example, YouTube, Google Images and MemeGenerator do not own the copyright on materials uploaded by users.

Improper inline citations:

I see you've cited sources, but not used the required format where the title is in the sentence. Refer back to the Citation Methods column 1: http://people.oregonstate.edu/~vanlondp/cs391/articles/citations.html

If a student mentions that they could not find enough details for a page, leave this note:

I see your note about not finding enough detail. Did you consult with a librarian or the instructor for assistance? Please let me know in the Comment box. Thank you.

When writing in general does not fill half a page or more:

To earn full points, I recommend you read more so you have more to write about. A minimum of 250 words are required per page, not counting the author name and title.

If a student's hyperlinks don't work due to the PDF file driver being out of date, don't mark them down.

If a student's bibliography does not include the required entries, leave this comment in the rubric:

The Explore Topics reading list must be added to the bibliography page. The entries can be in any order and do not need to be in separate groups. Set the list to 12pt type in a bullet list for easy reading.

No issues:
Thank you for your analysis, __. Nice job! If you have questions about the feedback I left in the rubric, please reply here in the Grades --> Assignment --> Commenting box so the Instructor can respond quickly.

If they were confused about writing in the first- versus the third-person style:

Please note that anytime you are to write about a personal experience, you should write in the first-person style; no disclaimer needed. When synthesizing an article, however you'll need to write in the third-person style.

The first paragraph must cite at least one reference to show where they got the information...it can't be from memory. The first paragraph ought to cite their first reference and if they don't cite again in the second paragraph, assume they got it from the first reference. If not, no need to provide feedback, just mark it down.

  • If a paragraph or two is lacking enough wordcount or detail:
In general, your paragraphs are lacking enough detail about what you're reading. The minimum word count per paragraph is 150 and all paragraphs require a citation/hyperlinked title. For the discussions, focus on details without over generalizing.
    or this:
In this BACC STS course, analysis is a major objective, so the expectation is that you can provide a great deal of discourse about a case and cite a theory or approach that matches your educated opinion. Most of the cases going forward will expect a citation for the theory as well as a full page of your opinion about the case.
    or this:
Remember, all discussion paragraphs, including the reply, require a citation/hyperlinked title and all paragraphs must be a minimum of 150 words related directly to what you read.
  • If a paragraph does not use the words "positive" or "negative" (or synonyms) then leave this message:
In the future, please explicitly state which consequences are positive and which are negative to make your analysis more clear.
  • In the Analysis paragraph, students must cite a theory or approach as per chapter 2. Give this feedback if they did not cite:
We were expecting discussion and a citation/hyperlinked title for either an ethical theory or approach, as noted in step 2.6: http://people.oregonstate.edu/~vanlondp/cs391/articles/ethical-framework.php
  • Replies to others' threads require a counter-argument as well as a citation/hyperlinked title that relates to their counter-argument.
We were expecting a counter-argument backed up with evidence from another article (as well as a hyperlink in the title of that article).
  • If a student repeats what they said in their main post in the new reply (such as focusing on the same person and the same theory), mark them down by .5 and leave this message:
The counter-argument is too much like your original post. In the future, choose a different topic/person to focus on for the counter-argument rather than the same topic you posted about earlier.
  • For the instructor to provide when a student did not submit a thread:
Sorry you were unable to participate in this important discussion of the recent cases. Discussions allow you to interact with your peers to learn more about the issues. In future weeks, I recommend you start reading/writing no later than Friday so you can reply to others over the weekend and finish up that before Monday morning. Reply here in the Assignment Comments if you have questions about this. Thank you.

    • If a student provides a link to a movie rather than embedding it in the illustration page:
When you choose a video illustration in future cases, please use the "Insert --> Video" menu to embed it so we can view it without launching a new tab. Thank you.
    • For the illustrations with missing or incorrect copyright statements:
The copyright owner of a meme or movie is the creator/publisher and not necessarily the host. For example, YouTube, Google Images and MemeGenerator do not own the copyright on materials uploaded by users.
    • Improper inline citations:
I see you've cited sources, but not used the required format where the title is in the sentence. Refer back to the Citation Methods column 1: http://people.oregonstate.edu/~vanlondp/cs391/articles/citations.html

    Interactive Timeline Entry

    Examples: Bell Labs Solar Panel

Open this term's Spreadsheet Template (Step 5.8) and this term's Interactive Timeline (Step 5.9)

    • The Environmental Impact paragraph should mention raw materials or e-waste. This could include topics such as mining metals and chemicals, factory run-off, deforestation, depletion of healthy rivers/streams, dumping, recycling, etc.
This paragraph lacks mention of raw materials and the impact of mining or other problems.
This paragraph lacks mention of e-waste and the impact on waterways and forests.
    • If the interactive timeline entry doesn't discuss all three required topics, then leave this comment:
All three of these topics were expected in timeline: description of the invention, environmental impact, and social impact.
    • If students aren't writing with enough detail in most of their paragraphs:
The expected minimum wordcount per paragraph is 150 (not counting the author name or article title). In the future, I recommend you read more so you have more deteail to write about.

    Case Discussion

Students choose a topic found in the interactive timeline and discuss it.

    • If the first paragraph doesn't include writing about the invention's purpose and raw materials, leave this comment:
We were expecting more detail about the hardware's purpose and its raw materials.
    • If the second paragraph doesn't include writing about the positive and negative environmental impacts, leave this comment:
What were the specific positive and negative environmental impacts of the technology?
    • If the third paragraph doesn't include writing about the positive and negative social impacts, leave this comment:
What are specific positive and negative social impacts of the technology?
    • The Reply paragraph is extra credit. A counter-argument of the social and environmental impacts is expected along with a hyperlinked source title.

Case Discussion Comments

  • The Advertisement must show diversity or lack of diversity.
  • If the advertisement must be embedded rather than linked in the thread.
  • If the advertisement does not render, then mark down to 0 and add this feedback:
The advertisement is not rendering, either because it was embedded using the Media tool, rather than the Image Embed tool, the URL was wrong, or it is way too big and taking too long.
  • These types of illustrations are not advertisements and get marked down:
    • A chart or graph.
Women in Google's Global Wordforce chart is not an advertisement.
    • A photo with no information/text.
Activision's photo shows diversity, but without promotional information, it is not an advertisement.
Lockheed's photo does not provide promotional information, so it is not an advertisement.
    • A meme.
World of Warcraft team photo is not an ad; it appears to have been edited with some detail to make it a meme but it is not an advertisement.
    • A video that does not actively recruit workers, explain a specific program at the company, or promote a product or service.
This news article about Alibaba is not an advertisement; it is a third-party endorsement, perhaps.
These advertisements meet requirements because they advertise the company, a program, or a product or service:

This is an Apple recruitment ad.
This is a Google recruitment ad.
This is an Amazon Program ad.
      This is a Tencent ad.
  • If the Reply paragraph lacks a counter-argument and/or a citation/hyperlinked title that relates to their counter-argument.
We were expecting a counter-argument backed up with evidence from another article (as well as a hyperlink in the title of that article).
  • When writing in general does not fill half a page or more:

If the Job Description page is missing a citation, give partial credit.

On each Dilemma page, they must:

    • Describe a single ethical or moral Information Technology (IT) problem that could occur in the job they described on page 2.
    • Hyperlink the Code number and name from the ACM Code of Ethics list.
Hyperlinked numbers and names of ACM clauses are missing.
    • Describe 3 actions they could take to prevent or solve the problem.
    • Cite research as needed to support the prevention/solution.
